Advocates for Public International Law Uganda (APILU) is an organization established by Ugandan Lawyers to promote understanding, observance and entrenchment of the Rule of Law, International Humanitarian, Criminal and Human Rights law in Uganda. APILU is funded by Open Society Initiative for East Africa (OSIEA).
APILU aims to provide a forum for the free exchange of ideas on promoting observance of the Rule of Law; promote understanding of international law, in particular the international conventions that Uganda is a signatory or state party to through information, education and communication; to institute or commence civil or criminal proceedings and/or prosecute human rights cases and/or Rule of Law related cases, including democratic governance; build the capacity of Ugandan advocates and law students in International law and various international instruments; and to facilitate a platform for promoting activities aimed at entrenching observance of Public International Law, International Criminal Law and International Human Rights Law.
Objectives
• To provide a forum for the free exchange of ideas on promoting observance of the Rule of Law;
• Promote understanding of international law, in particular the international conventions that Uganda is a signatory or state party to, through information, education and communication
• To institute or commence civil or criminal proceedings and/or prosecute human rights cases and/or Rule of Law related cases, including, but not limited to democratic governance
• To build the capacity of Ugandan advocates and law students in International law and various international instruments
• To facilitate a platform for promoting activities aimed at entrenching the observance of public international law, international criminal law and international human rights law
Activities
To promote awareness, observance and entrenchment of International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights and the Rule of Law, APILU undertakes the following activities
• Provide technical legal expertise on international Criminal Law and International Criminal justice and the suitability of using international criminal justice mechanisms to respond to war crimes and crimes against humanity in Uganda.
• Engage Law students in universities in Uganda to discuss various International Criminal Law and Criminal Justice issues and the relevance and implications of international criminal law and justice in the Ugandan context.
• Disseminate clear and simplified information on the implications of International Criminal Law and International Criminal Justice to Uganda
• Undertake skills development workshops focusing on issues like litigating human rights cases and working with victims of international crimes.
• Increase public awareness on the impact of key and current international legal issues such as victims’ rights and rights to fair trials and their application in the Ugandan context.
• Undertake strategic Public Interest Litigation
on International Criminal Law, International Criminal Justice and
International Humanitarian Law.
